Graphic Design: Kyoto's DDD Graphics Gallery/ Masayoshi Nakajo

Yesterday we visited the DDD Graphics Gallery in Kyoto. The current exhibit is entitled "In & Out" by Masayoshi Nakajo. Nakajo was born in Tokyo in 1933 and attended the Tokyo University of Fine Arts in the Design Department, then went on to work for Shiseido's Advertising Department. He helped design Shiseido's Hanatsubaki magazine, and was a designer for The Ginza/Tactics Design. It was very interesting to see the work of such an experienced graphic designer.

I liked the simplicity and elegance of his work, and his use of strategic white space. We weren't allowed to take pictures in the gallery, but here are some photos of the work in the exhibit from the DDD website.

I like how he uses a small selection of colors in each piece, forcing the eye to think more about these specific colors. I also like his use of spacing and overlapping text.

I continued to research his work when I got home and found some more pieces I loved which were not in the exhibit. The cool thing about graphic design is that it's made digitally, meaning you aren't really losing anything by viewing it on a screen as long as it's high quality, whereas other forms of visual art like sculpture and painting are best appreciated in person.
